Effects of Nutrient Intake Status on Cognitive Functioning among Older Adults Living Alone: The Mediating Effects of Depression
Jeon Jin
Abstract
This study is to verify the mediating effect of depression on the effect of nutrient intake status on cognitive functioning in the elderly living alone. For this purpose, the analysis was conducted using the data of the elderly survey conducted by the Korea Institute of Health and Social Affairs in 2020. The SPSS 25.0 statistical program was used for data analysis, and descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis were performed as the analysis method, and the analysis method of Baron and Kenny(1986) was used to verify the mediating effect. As a result, nutrient intake status of the elderly living alone did not directly affect cognitive functioning, but indirectly through depression. In other words, Depression has a complete mediating effect between nutrient intake status and cognitive functioning of the elderly living alone. Based on these findings, practical implications for preventing cognitive functioning decline in an aging society that is expected to be in the age of 100, the limitations of this study, and future research directions were discussed.
